How to set up two-factor authentication

  1. Go to Account in the dashboard.
  2. Open the Two-factor tab and press Set up two-factor authentication.
  3. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app — 1Password, Authy, Google Authenticator, any of them.
  4. Type the six digits the app shows and press Confirm.
  5. Save your recovery codes, then confirm you have.

From then on you are asked for a code every time you sign in.

The recovery codes matter

They are shown once. They are your way back in if you lose the phone, and we cannot show them to you again.

Put them in a password manager, or print them and keep them somewhere you would keep a spare key. Your account page shows how many are still unused.

Each code works once.

If you signed in with Google

Google has no code step of its own, so after signing in you are taken to a short extra screen asking for your authenticator code. That is expected, and it is what keeps two-factor meaningful on a Google account.

Turning it off

Account → Two-factor, then Turn off two-factor authentication. You are asked for a code to confirm.

When to write to us

Write to us if you have lost both the phone and the recovery codes. We will ask you to prove the account is yours before turning two-factor off, and that is deliberately not a quick process — it is the whole point of having it on.

Didn’t solve it?
